Description
The early modern prints of Kawase Hasui and Ohara Shōson, two of the finest artists of the shin hanga, or “new prints,” movement, were significant to reviving Japan’s woodblock print industry after the devastating Kantō earthquake of 1923. Like Hasui’s home, publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō’s business was destroyed in the ensuing fire, as were hundreds of existing woodblocks stored there. Shōzaburō quickly reopened his print shop and encouraged Hasui, Shōson, and other shin hanga artists to create new works that blended Western aesthetics with traditional subjects of Japanese art. The prints were popular in the United States, and a landmark exhibition in 1930 at the Toledo Museum of Art brought together more than three hundred of these “new prints.” Many of the thirty-two works reproduced here were part of the original exhibition, and all are now in the collection of the Toledo Museum of Art.
